Assistive Listening Devices

Assistive listening devices are designed to help individuals with hearing impairment in different listening situations. Many people with hearing loss obtain great benefit from hearing aids. However, for others, hearing aids are not enough. This may be due to the severity of hearing loss or a specific hearing requirement. Assistive listening devices can provide additional hearing benefit since they can increase the loudness of desired sound (radio, television, telephone,...) without increasing background noise. Problems with personal communication can be helped since the speech signal is sent directly form speaker to the listener's ear. Therefore, these devices are very helpful in noisy situations or when listening at a distance.

Individuals with all types and degrees of hearing loss, as well as normal hearing, can benefit from assistive listening devices. We provide many types of assistive listening devices for personal communication and those that can be used with the telephone, television, and stereo. We also have signaling devices such as an alarm clock, smoke alarm, doorbell, and telephone ringer.

Every individual can have very specific hearing needs. We would be happy to evaluate your needs and provide appropriate recommendations.

Balance & Dizziness: Infrared Video Nystagmography (VNG)

The inner ear is responsible for both hearing and balance. Video Nystagmography (VNG) is a battery of tests designed to evaluate the balance portion of the inner ear, as well as more "central" components that work together to keep you on an even keel.

The physician's evaluation of the dizzy patient often requires assessment of the vestibular system. Videonystagmography testing utilizes infrared video goggles to record eye movements caused by positional or caloric stimulation of the inner ear balance structures. The test battery will identify the presence of dizziness or imbalance due to unequal neural messages to the vestibular system.

Comprehensive Hearing Test: Puretone testing & Speech testing

Puretone testing is conducted to determine the degree and configuration of hearing loss. Tones of various frequencies and intensity levels are presented to identify the softest level a patient can detect. This evaluation helps determine the cause of the hearing loss so appropriate audiological and medical recommendation can be made.

Speech testing is conducted to fully understand a patient's ability to detect and understand speech. This evaluation is necessary to fully understand how the hearing impairment may impact a patient's ability to understand speech in daily situations.

The hearing test is conducted in a sound booth to ensure outside noises will not interfere with the the results. The information obtained from these tests are critical for appropriate audiological and medical recommendations.

Hearing Protection

Exposure to loud sounds can cause permanent, irreversible damage to your hearing. If someone is exposed to high level noise such as power tools, machinery, lawn mowers, guns, etc., the use of hearing protection is recommended. Today, there are several types and styles of hearing protection available.

In our office, we provide custom hearing protection which is an earplug specifically molded for your ear. We also carry other types of generic (one-size-fits-all) earplugs and earmuffs designed to protect your hearing.

Musicians Earplugs

Musicians require protection from high level sounds just like anyone else. However, conventional earplugs dampen too much sound and can create an unnatural sound quality. Musicians earplugs are designed to protect hearing from potentially damaging levels of sound without degrading sound quality.

Musician earplugs are available in Ready-Fit and custom styles.

Swim Plugs

Water precautions for the ear are recommended for individuals with tubes, ear infections, drainage from the ears, and perforated eardrums. Some individuals just prefer to keep water out of their ears.

We provide two types of swim plugs. The custom swim plugs are specifically molded for your ear and can provide a comfortable fit and effective seal. We also provide generic (one-size-fits-all) swim plugs which are made out of a silicon material. These plugs require you to mold and shape the plug to your ear with every use. The generic swim plugs can be used with a neoprene headband for greater effectiveness.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) uses a combination of sound therapy and directive counseling to assist in overcoming the bothersome effects of tinnitus, thus making the patient no longer aware of their tinnitus, except when they focus their attention on it, and even then tinnitus is no longer annoying. Hyperacusis is a decreased tolerance to sound and can be a serious and frustrating problem. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy can also be used in the treatment of Hyperacusis to totally or partially restore normal levels of sound sensitivity.
